2009 Preakness Stakes
The Preakness Stakes is one of the most famous horse race in the United States. It started two years before of the Kentucky Derby and now it is the second leg of the Triple Crown event. In 1890 for administrative reason only the Preakness was not held for 3 consecutive years, it started again in 1894.
The former Maryland Governor Oden Bowie was the founder of this race; he named the then mile and a half (2.41 km) race in honor of the colt named "Preakness" from Milton Holbrook in New Jersey who won the Dinner Party Stakes on the day Pimlico Race Course opened on October 25, 1870.
The first Race back in May 27th, 1873 drew just seven horses and the purse by then was around $2050. Now prizes and contenders are a little bit different. The competition holds 20 horses and the purse is around the million dollars. The race then was held at Gravesend Race track at Coney Island in New York. Now a day the hosting track is Pimlico, located in Baltimore, Maryland.
There are some horses that are driving the attention of the audience for this race. Those are "Mine That Bird" who won the last Kentucky Derby Sat May 2nd, 2009, and the other one is "Musket Man". Actually Musket Man got in third place at the Kentucky Derby and that is why there is a high chance to see its name in the first three places at the end of this race.
Results
The results for the Preakness Stakes are really interesting. The odds were all in Mine That Bird, but this time the winner was surprisingly “Rachel Alexandra”, followed by the Kentucky Derby Champion, “Mine That Bird” and “Musket Man” in the third place.
